Drawing Stories by Freya Blackwood

  • Orange Regional Gallery 151 Byng Street Orange, NSW, 2800 Australia (map)

This exhibition surveys the 13-year career of one of Australia’s most celebrated children’s book illustrators Freya Blackwood.

It features around 200 works including original drawings, mock-up books, story-boards and hand-made toys created over the past decade; and documents Freya’s artistic journey and her collaborative relationships with leading authors. The works in the exhibition have been selected from 22 of Freya’s publications.

Freya has won many awards for her illustrations including the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal in 2010, and three Book Council of Australia Awards in 2015 – the first time in the award’s 69-year history that a single creator has been honoured three times in the same year. Her books have been translated into other languages including French, German, Spanish, Russian, Italian, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

Freya Blackwood lives in Orange, with her daughter Ivy, a blind pet rabbit called Quartz, five chooks and Pivot the Whippet, all of whom have featured in her books.
